BAK introduces new general director

Bogatyr Access Komir (BAK), the largest coal mining group in Kazakhstan, introduced Viktor Shukin as the new general director, the company announced on Friday. Prior to this appointment, Shukin served as Director for Coal Business at the United Company Russian Aluminum (UC RUSAL). Shukin took over from Sergei Opanasenko who was appointed BAK managing director.

UC RUSAL is part of the Access Industries industrial group and through BAK operates the Bogatyr and Severnyi coal mines, the largest coal mines in Kazakhstan, through a joint venture with state-owned Samruk Energo.

The total coal reserves of Bogatyr and Severny are estimated at 4.5 billion tons of coal. The coal production will total 42 million tons a year, which is about 45 percent of Kazakhstan’s entire coal production. The joint venture plans to expand mining capacity to 60 million tons.
