Legal status of Caspian Sea to be discussed at summit in Baku

(Kazakhstan Today) - Legal status of the Caspian Sea will be discussed at the summit in Baku on September 5-6. The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan, Serik Primbetov, informed, the agency reports referring to Trend information agency.

According to Trend, “the 23rd session of five-sided special working group on development of Convention on legal status of the Caspian Sea will take place on September 4 in Baku.

According to S. Primbetov, “the representatives of five Presidents of the near-Caspian states - Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan are expected to participate in discussions.”

“The 23rd session of five-sided special working group on development of Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the level of Vice Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Caspian littoral states (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Russia) had been planned for July 23-24, but did not take place for technical reasons and was postponed until September of 2008,” the message informs.

“The main stumbling-block in this issue is the position of Iran that still insists on transfer of 20 percent of the surface and bottom of the Caspian Sea,” the Ambassador said.
