(SRI) - Kazakhstan’s proven natural gas reserves have amounted to 1.82 trillion cubic meters (tcm) as of January 1, 2009, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2009.
Turkmenistan’s natural gas reserves are estimated at 7.94 tcm, Azerbaijan’s at 1.20 tcm and Uzbekistan’s at 1.58 tcm.
Kazakhstan’s reserves represent approximately 1 percent of the world’s proves reserves. According to BP, 2008 gas production in Kazakhstan totaled 30.2 billion cubic meters (bcm), a 13.9-percent increase compared to 2007. Meanwhile, gas consumption rose 5.1-percent to 20.6 bcm.
Most of Kazakhstan’s gas reserves are located in the west of the country near the Caspian Sea, with roughly 25% of proved reserves located in the Karachaganak field.
Kazakhstan’s proven crude oil reserves have amounted to 39.8 billion barrels as of the beginning of 2009, making up about 3.2 percent of the world’s reserves. At the same time, Azerbaijan’s proven reserves are estimated at 7.0 billion barrels while Uzbekistan’s and Turkmenistan’s reserves amount to approximately 0.6 billion barrels each.
Kazakhstan produced on average 1.554 million barrels per day (bpd), up 5.1 percent from 2007, while consumption fell 6.4 percent to 229 thousand bpd.
