Banking associations appeal for trade finance debt to be excluded from restructuring
(SRI) - Two international banking industry associations appealed to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to ensure that Kazakhstan’s troubled banks exclude trade finance debt from restructuring.

Central bank cuts refinancing rate to 7.5 percent
(SRI) - The National Bank of Kazakhstan has cut the key refinancing rate from 8 percent to a four-year low of 7.5 percent effective on Monday, August 10, the central bank said on Friday.

Kookmin shelves plan to buy controlling stake in Bank CenterCredit
(SRI) - South Korea’s Kookmin Bank has reportedly shelved its plan to buy a controlling stake in Kazakh Bank CenterCredit (BCC) this year and will cap its ownership interest at 41 percent.

ENERGY:

Tengizchevroil production up 16 percent in H1
(SRI) - Tengizchevroil, the Chevron-led joint venture developing the Tengiz field in western Kazakhstan, increased crude oil output 16 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2009 to 10.2 million tons (81.2 million barrels).

Kyrgyz opposition leader suspects he was poisoned

(Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s main opponent in July elections believes he has been poisoned and is leaving the Central Asian country for treatment, his office said Thursday.
