(bne) - Kazakhstan’s national rail operator Kazakhstan Temir Zholy has outlined plans over the summer for a massive KZT5.5 trillion ($36.5 billion) modernization program, which the government hopes will turn the country into land bridge for transiting goods between China and Europe.

(AP) - Thousands of troops from Russia and four other ex-Soviet nations began military exercises in southern Kazakhstan on Friday, the first of its kind for the newly formed NATO-style rapid-reaction force.

U.S. complains about Turkmen student travel ban
