(SRI) - Kazakhstan’s uranium output will be approximately 13,800 metric tons in 2009 and will rise to 15,000 metric tons in 2010, according to Zhandos Abishev, head of mining at the state holding and investment company Samruk-Kazyna.
Kazakhstan produced 8,521 tonnes of uranium last year, up from 6,637 in 2007.
Kazakhstan’s state uranium company Kazatomprom said earlier it plans to become the world’s largest uranium producer by year’s end.
Kazatomprom also said it signed an agreement with Japans Nuclear Fuel Industries, Ltd., Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., and Sumitomo Corp. on converting uranium products into components of nuclear fuel rods.
